G&E
Looks Better, Sounds Better
New York (May,2003)
--Gearing up for a busy schedule with all the
tools for a speedier workflow, G&E Music has modified its look
a bit, and made some sound investments in the future. This team of
sound designing-songwriting-music mixing masters have re-designed and
renovated their NYC facility, positioning themselves for an accelerating
business. But, don't worry, the added polish does not affect the "chill" factor" at
G&E. Owners Erik Blicker and Glenn Schloss have really put the
facility through some extensive renovations, adding a 5.1 mix room
and an isolation booth into a space formerly designated as a stereo
mixing and editing room.
Outfitted for 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound mixing, the new Studio
A features an NHT Pro surround monitoring system, Audient ASP 510 surround
sound controller, Pro Tools Mix Plus system, Sony 32-inch Vega Trinitron
for lock-to-picture requirements, and new mic preamps from Avalon and
Amek. The studio also features a versatile MIDI/keyboard/soft synth set-up
for composing. G&E's Studio B functions as a stereo recording/mixing/composing
suite, powered by a Pro Tools Mix Plus system, a slew of processing and
effects gear, and a variety of instruments.
With their hands in it all, G&E's creative team turns out broadcast
sound design, show packaging, original music for film and television,
commercial spots, promotional videos, and original songs for artist development.
The Acoustic Systems' isolation booth enhances G&E's capabilities
for voice over work, as well as for vocal and instrumental overdubs.
Built into Studio A, the VO booth works as an isolated recording space
for both studios. G&E has also made aesthetic improvements, adding
new wood floors to its studio space, and double sliding glass doors in
between Studios A and B for improved isolation.
While the reinforced isolation improves the facility's overall sound
quality, G&E's surround capability truly expands the group's musical
options. "Now, with Studio A's surround system, we can work in 5.1," notes
Blicker. "A lot of commercials are being made for high-definition
broadcast in surround sound, the surround market is really taking off.
We're able to take that on, as well as mixing films in Dolby Digital
surround. And, we'll be leaders in our core business--broadcast design--as
that also makes the transition to 5.1 surround."
The enhancements made to G&E's facility create not only a higher-end
work environment, but one which facilitates an even more efficient relationship
to the clients' studios and work spaces. Another accelerator to the G&E
workflow is the ease with which they can now exchange OMF files with
post houses. "The interoperability between Avid and Digidesign is
at its highest peak ever," Blicker points out. "We can now
work quickly and efficiently with any video editor in the country. The
files come straight from the Avid editors, and we can prepare and deliver
a mix to them, that they can drop right into their final edit. It's like
we're right down the hall."
Finally, with the addition of Studio A, G&E can turn out more music
and sound design for its growing client base which includes Nickelodeon,
Discovery Channel, and VH1. "The two rooms will be independent and
the vocal booth will tie into both editing suites, so that we can run
two sessions simultaneously," adds Schloss. "We've really increased
flexibility in terms of how we can run sessions now." Clients will
love hanging out in G&E's not-so-corporate Gramercy neighborhood--taking
a break from the crowded and noisy midtown area (which, by the way, is
still nearby).
