SURF'S UP AT G&E MUSIC
New York, NY (September,
2007)
Court TV recently tapped G&E Music for a surf rock style
opening theme for its new reality cop show, "Ocean Force:
Panama City." At the direction of Court TV, G&E creative
partners Glenn Schloss and Erik Blicker worked out some surfer-punk
tunes and delivered an entire show package to the network, including
variations on the main theme for bumpers and credit bed.
"Ocean Force: Panama
City," which premiered in early September, follows beach
police on the reckless drunken frat boys and spring breakers
beat. The high-octane show needed a rev-you-up show open, and
Court TV producers asked G&E for a short surfer punk jam,
a la Dick Dale and Pulp Fiction. "Erik and I rocked out
in typical fashion," says Schloss, the drummer of the duo.
Accordingly, Blicker made a convincing Dick Dale. Blicker notes,
"We're musical chameleons, that's what we do, so we can
totally rip off any style. But Court TV wanted that sound updated,
so there was a really creative back-and-forth between us getting
to exactly the right sound."

Court TV Music Supervisor Elizabeth
Morgan comments, "G&E always 'gets' our creative direction.
They do exactly what we ask for and always add that special something
that makes the track--something we wouldn't have known to ask for."
To modernize the surf rock style, Schloss thickened up the drum sound,
doubling and fattening up some kicks and snares with Stylus RMX elements.
G&E's hybrid drum
kit--Roland V-Drums and real cymbals--figures critically into the
story of any G&E project, as Schloss has set it up for just about
any genre, and become that rare breed of drummer who can really rock
a software-triggering kit. He's both a drummer and programmer, using
tools like Stylus RMX, Drumagog and Ableton Live to generate totally
fresh and unique drum sounds in any style.

On guitar, Blicker
went totally authentic. "We did all the guitars with
a '62 Deluxe reverb amp, and replaced all of the simulated
amps with the real stuff," he explains. G&E also
did some cool sound design to correspond with logo hits, as
well as creating some variations on the main theme for bumps
into and out of commercial, and the credit bed. "The
credit bed was fun because we added a few more elements and
did some cool breakdown stuff," Schloss adds. "The
folks at Court TV, who we've worked with a few times before,
were all psyched about how it came out." On that note,
Morgan shares, "G&E added a pocket trumpet on the
end logo resolve--genius!"

As demonstrated on
the "Ocean Force: Panama City" gig, G&E does
more than simply execute the client's request, making the
music house a great audio partner for any production team.
Morgan sums up: "G&E is always a pleasure to work
with--they're super talented, super professional and super
cool. They nail every job, on time and on budget. They understand
the zany world of network TV and are always able to accommodate
last minute changes and revisions. They make my job easy!"
